Buy Do It Yourself Psyllid Control, Professional Grade Psyllid Killer Spray

Psyllids are a family of insect that is similar to very small cicadas in appearance and are often referred to as ‘jumping plantlice’ as adults tend to jump rather than fly when disturbed. There are over 100 different species of psyllid, each of which tends to be host specific and only feed on a single type of plant, whether it be boxwoods, acacia, eucalyptus or others. These flies are very small and have piercing/sucking mouthparts that differentiate them from some other similar insects. Damage caused by the nymphs and immature psyllids is often most obvious, with many types of psyllid leaving large pitted blisters on leaf tissue. This occurs because the nymph feeds on the center of the blister which becomes dark and pitted, while the surrounding leaf tissue get inflamed, causing the blistering appearance. One of the most commonly found and most harmful psyllids in the average landscape is boxwood psyllid. Left unchecked, boxwood psyllid can cause a tremendous about of damage to your hedgerows. The number one sign of boxwood psyllid is the tips of leaves on terminal stems will turn yellow and cupped, often with a bulbous blister on the leaf. This is a sure-fire sign of psyllid, and if you break open the blistered, cupped leaf, you will find a small white insect within, which is the immature psyllid that is feeding on the plant. In addition to the obvious damage of blistered foliage psyllids also excrete honeydew on leaf tissue below, resulting in sooty mold issues as secondary damage caused by psyllids. When looking for how to control psyllids, broad-spectrum insecticides can be useful. Many species of psyllid reproduce all year and so persistent applications are necessary to maintain control. One recommendation we at LawnPro have when treating psyllid is to make sure that you have damaging populations before using control products. There are many predatory insects such as ladybugs/lady beetles, parasitic wasps and others that feed on psyllids. Most insecticides that will control psyllids will also kill these beneficial predators, so treating with chemicals is not always best, particularly when the predators are keeping populations of psyllid at bay. Clearly, when significant damage is occurring to plants sprays become necessary.
