Description
SedgeHammer is a selective herbicide providing control of nutsedge in turf and landscaping. SedgeHammer is a post-emergent herbicide that controls both yellow and purple nutsedge while also controlling various other weeds and suppressing kyllinga. This product is safe to use on both cool and warm season grass types and has a short re-entry time, allowing use of your lawn once the product has dried. Applied midseason as nutsedge is in full growth, SedgeHammer is a great solution to the unsightly tall sedges in your lawn. When applied later in the season as nutsedge growth slows down, SedgeHammer provides great tuber control, helping to prevent the spread of nutsedge the following summer.
-A selective post-emergent herbicide focused on the control of Yellow and Purple nutsedge which can provide control all the way to the tuber.
-SedgeHammer can also provide suppression of kyllinga and control to other broadleaf weeds.
-When nutsedge is hand-weeded, the removal of leaf tissue sends a hormone to tubers in the soil that can cause up to 18 new plants to sprout. Nutsedge is one plant that can only be properly addressed with herbicides. It is for this reason Nutsedge is considered one of the 3 most troublesome weeds in the United States.
-For absolute best control of tubers, apply later in the season as nutsedge growth begins to slow. It is at this time the plant is translocating most resources to new tuber generation, and the ideal time to make sure Sedgehammer controls the tubers. When applied in this manner, you can successfully stop the spread of nutsedge and instead eliminate future problems. For infestations that have been allowed to spread unchecked for years, this process may take a couple years for complete eradication.

Sedgehammer goes specifically after nutsedge and when used at the appropriate rate should not cause any harm to your mondo grass. Even selective herbicides will kill plants they shouldn't if over-applied, so be sure to follow the label. Nutsedge often takes multiple sprays, sometimes over multiple years, to be eradicated, but this is one of the best products available to get control.

The label recommends waiting 4 weeks after applying Empero before seeding. Empero can also stunt the growth of new seedlings, so it is not recommended that you use this in areas where you need to focus on seed germination. Unfortunately, the fall is a great time to seed AND to control nutsedge, so if you have isolated areas of nutsedge that are in areas where the grass is still thick, it may be worth it to you to still spray those areas even if it affects the germination, really depends on existing density.

In addition to yellow and purple nutsedge and kyllinga, Sedgehammer also controls a few other weeds including pigweed, ragweed and smartweed. However, Sedgehammer should be used as a product focused on the control of nutsedge and kyllinga, it is not a broad spectrum herbicide at all. Broad spectrum herbicides do not a do a good job controlling nutsedge due to its unique biology, which is why this is such a highly recommended specialty product.

Unfortunately this is a very common problem, sod tends to grow in the same soils where nutsedge thrives. The products we have listed for nutsedge WILL control nutsedge, our most recommended products being Sedgehammer, Empero, and Dismiss NXT. However, we recommend you wait a few months after sod installation before treating the nutsedge
